XDR for ChromeOS: What Does It Mean for the Cyber Industry?

CrowdStrike's Michael Sentonas on Aiding Education Clients With XDR for Chromebooks
Michael Sentonas, president, CrowdStrike

CrowdStrike has focused on bringing its extended detection and response technology to users with less expensive devices such as Chromebooks by adding support for Google's ChromeOS.

The partnership between the endpoint protection and public cloud giants will give CrowdStrike clients greater visibility into the security posture and compliance of ChromeOS devices along with everything running inside their environment, said President Michael Sentonas. He said CrowdStrike has broadened its security footprint for companies that need support for devices that use different operating systems (see: CrowdStrike's Michael Sentonas on Identity, Cloud and XDR).

"No one's really doing quality the way that we think about EDR," Sentonas said. "So we've been extending our capability to Android and iOS using the same concept that we talked about with ChromeOS - giving people visibility, understanding what attackers might be doing, and getting that into the platform so that you don't have a gap in your architecture."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Sentonas also discusses:

  • The challenges of bringing XDR tech to ChromeOS for schools and universities;
  • What's unique about protecting ChromeOS versus Microsoft, Apple or Linux;
  • Why good cloud security requires both agent-based and agentless protection.

Sentonas is responsible for CrowdStrike's product and go-to-market functions, including its sales, marketing, product and engineering, threat intelligence, privacy and policy, corporate development, corporate strategy, and CTO teams. Prior to CrowdStrike, Sentonas held multiple leadership roles at McAfee and served as chief technology officer. He is an active public authority on security issues and the evolving threat landscape.
