Utica College Debuts New Graduate Program Focused on Cybersecurity, Forensics
Want a Master's in Cybersecurity?
Looking for a graduate program emphasizing cybersecurity and forensics?

Utica College in New York now offers unique programs at the bachelor's and master's level that focus exclusively on preparing young adults to take up careers in the emerging areas of cybercrime, cyber intelligence, fraud and forensics investigations.

"What makes our program unique is how we synergize the pieces required in understanding cybersecurity, cybercrime and criminal justice," says Joe Giordano, director of economic crime management at Utica College, in a new podcast interview with Tracy Kitten, managing editor for Bankinfosecurity.com. "This is where the future is as everything -- business, industry, government, intelligence systems and critical infrastructure -- is all based on software, computers, interconnections, systems protection, security and investigations, which are critical to today's situation."

Both degree programs have essentially two areas of concentration:

  • Cybersecurity, which entails an understanding of national security and analytical issues. The program looks deeper into national critical infrastructure, advanced topics in cybersecurity, cyber terrorism, cyber counter intelligence and all hazard type of planning.
  • Forensics, which includes a program consisting of various cyber crime and investigative aspects -- how to analyze traditional systems, network-based systems, mobile and telecommunications.

"This is not a computer science curriculum; this is different," Giordano says. "What we're looking at from our side is interesting details of computers more from a user's aspect in terms of systems and tools."

He also discusses skill sets in demand and jobs that students are filling within the public and private sectors.
