Startups and Cybersecurity: Gaps and Remedies

Aryaka Networks' Ranga on Securing Startups, Ensuring Product Security
Venkat Ranga, vice president of business information systems and head of IT, Aryaka Networks

A startup cybersecurity strategy should be akin to a Russian doll: It should be built to preserve core element of business. In most cases, this is a product offering, which needs to be secure, said Venkat Ranga, vice president of business information systems and head of IT at Aryaka Networks.

"Your product is your IP, and the question is: What are you doing to protect your product?" Ranga said. "If you don't prioritize product security from the very beginning, then protecting the key elements in the future will be a costly proposition."

While startups might not have enterprise-grade security at the beginning, they can develop advanced cybersecurity by implementing basic security practices as they build the business, Ranga added.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Ranga also discusses:

  • Cost-effective ways for startups to upgrade to enterprise-level security;
  • The importance of identity and access management for startups;
  • Skills needed to address sophisticated attacks against startups.

Prior to Aryaka, Ranga was the head of IT business applications at Malwarebytes. He also served as senior manager at VMware. He has experience in finance, sales and marketing.
