SASE Integration Amid the Evolving Cybersecurity Landscape

NetWitness Field CTO Ben Smith on Providing Solutions Across the Spectrum

Secure access service edge has evolved significantly over the past four years, transforming from a relatively new idea into a well-defined and widely discussed framework for network and security architecture.

NetWitness, a network security company and an RSA Security business, focuses on integration rather than offering a SASE product, said Ben Smith, the company's field CTO. NetWitness aims to assist organizations in adopting SASE architectures that combine network and security services, primarily enhancing packet-level visibility, he said.

"There will always be technologies and business use cases that require an on-premises or legacy architecture. As we move forward, more and more of those will be cloud-based, and specifically on the SASE architecture," Smith said. "We don't want to be one of those vendors who has a one-way ticket to cloud. We need to continue to provide solutions across the entire spectrum, from on-premises to cloud to SASE."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Black Hat USA 2023, Smith also discussed:

  • How basic security hygiene is still a major concern in the industry;
  • The persistent problem of insider threats, whether they are malicious or stem from human error;
  • How NetWitness is helping clients navigate the complexities of the modern cybersecurity landscape.

Smith has more than 25 years of experience in the information security, risk management, networking and telecommunications industries. Prior to NetWitness, he was senior sales engineer at Verdiem. He is a patent holder and has served as a corporate representative to the National Cybersecurity Center of Excellence.
