Reduce Cost and Security Complexity by Ditching Legacy VPN

Continued reliance on legacy VPNs hinders remote work performance and fails to provide users or organizations with zero trust security protection, said Netskope's Sanjay Beri. Companies often start by augmenting their VPNs to enable zero trust network access before moving to full replacement, said Beri, the company's founder and CEO.

Organizations should view ZTNA adoption as not only a network or end-user decision, but also a security decision, Beri said. Netskope's initial focus was on cloud access security broker technology for governing and protecting data in SaaS applications, but Beri said the company's long-term vision was to tackle the hard problem of governing all internet traffic, including for on-premises applications (see: Netskope CEO Sanjay Beri on Pushing Into SD-WAN, IoT Defense).

"VPN is not built for the way that people work today," Beri said. "People work remote. They access cloud and their mobile. But a VPN sends you back to their corporate infrastructure. It doesn't allow you to work remote and get great performance."
