Rob Hornbuckle, CISO, Allegiant Air

Beyond advising the senior-most levels of the business in the strategic use of technology, the need to recruit new cybersecurity professionals often also tops the list of top tasks facing today's security leaders. "We've had a lot of people retire, and retire early with COVID coming up, especially the older generation with lots more experience in the field," says Rob Hornbuckle, CISO of Las Vegas-based airline Allegiant Air.

He says the effective strategies for helping to recruit to his team include "a personal touch and a lot of my own time being involved in it."

In an interview with Information Security Media Group as part of the CyberEdBoard's ongoing Profiles in Leadership series, recorded at RSA Conference 2022, Hornbuckle also discusses:

  • Cybersecurity recruitment trends and challenges;
  • How the role of the CISO continues to evolve;
  • The skills required to be a security leader today - and where to start.

Hornbuckle is responsible for all aspects of information security, risk, compliance and privacy for the leading ultra-low cost airline in the United States. Prior to Allegiant Airlines, among other roles, he served as the interim CISO for United Technologies Aerospace Systems - a leading airplane parts manufacturer for both the private and government sectors - as well as CISO for the Arby's Restaurant Group, which is a leading international fast-food chain.
