The shift to remote work introduced new security risks for Piedmont Healthcare since employees could no longer rely on the organization to protect their information.
Employees needed to understand the security issues associated with connecting to the network while using personal devices and get accustomed to remote working software that was needed but had been adopted with less vetting than usual, says Piedmont CISO Monique Hart. Piedmont had to grapple with securing everything from telemedicine appointments to COVID-related medical and vaccine data (see: Hospital CISO on Why Hackers Pursue Research, Pediatric Data).
"There was a lot of education that was required, as well as new technology," Hart says. "We needed to explain how we were going to do it remotely to ensure the individuals that are accessing our environment are truly those that should be and our patient data is being protected."
