Ahead of RSA Conference 2023, Greg Day, a member of the conference program committee focusing on the sessions about "hackers and threats," recently previewed the top themes at this year's event. He and other subcommittee members pored through 400 submissions and had to narrow the field to eight presenters.

Day, vice president and global field CISO at Cybereason, says the conference sessions will cover new concepts and diversity of ideas. One common thread, he says, is "old vulnerabilities and threat techniques being used in new environments."

For example, what if cybercriminals start to buy up old hardware and exploit vulnerabilities from a decade ago to steal the data? "So rather than some targeted botnet or ransomware, I just go buy cheap hardware and see what I can get from it," Day says.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Day discusses:

  • The trending themes of RSA conference 2023;
  • How cybercriminals are exploiting old vulnerabilities with new tactics and techniques;
  • Advice to security leaders on how to gain the most value from the event.

Day previously worked as CSO and CTO at Palo Alto Networks, FireEye and Symantec. His career began at Dr Solomon's, which later became McAfee, where he held a number of roles, including writing a behavioral antimalware tool that was an early forerunner to today's EDR tools. As a longtime advocate for stronger, more proactive cybersecurity, Day has helped many law enforcement agencies improve detection of cybercriminal behavior. He previously taught malware forensics to customers and agencies around the world and has worked in advisory capacities for the Council of Europe on cybercrime and the U.K. National Crime Agency. He currently serves on the Europol cybersecurity industry advisory board.
