Cisco plans to debut a common design language across its network and security offerings so they will no longer look or feel different from one another, says Jeetu Patel, executive vice president and general manager for security and collaboration at Cisco.

In the future, he says, operating an administration console in Meraki and setting up a policy in Umbrella will function the same way and have similar user interaction patterns so that they feel like a single platform rather than two separate products. And going forward, any networking or security products that Cisco acquires will be incorporated into the design system to provide a more cohesive and unified experience (see: Boosting Security Resilience and Defending the IT Ecosystem).

"If you want to democratize security, you have to make sure that the layman who doesn't think about security 24/7 can find it intuitive to use," Patel says. "Security historically has not been that way. Security has been something which is built for the power user who is very, very educated in security. Most people find security intimidating, and we want to make sure that gets taken away."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Patel also discusses:

  • The recent rehiring of VMware's Tom Gillis to lead Cisco's security business;
  • Why Cisco has seen so much momentum behind its zero trust practice;
  • The impact of November's layoffs on Cisco's security organization.

Patel, who has led Cisco's security and collaboration business units since August 2020, previously spent more than five years leading Box's product and platform strategy, setting the company’s long-term vision and road map for cloud content management in the enterprise. He previously served as general manager and chief executive of EMC's newly acquired Syncplicity business unit, a cloud service for enterprise file sync sharing and collaboration. Other key roles during his more than five years at EMC included chief marketing officer for the Information Intelligence Group and chief strategy officer. Before EMC, Patel was president of Doculabs, a research and advisory firm co-owned by Forrester Research that focused on collaboration and content management across a range of industries including financial services, insurance, energy, manufacturing and life sciences.
