ISMG Editors: Day 2 Overview at RSA Conference 2023

Skepticism on New AI Tech, Fears for the Metaverse and the New 'Shift Up Approach
From left, Tom Field, Mat Schwartz, and Anna Delaney

ChatGPT may be grabbing headlines, but many security practitioners are still skeptical about artificial intelligence. Information Security Media Group editors at the RSA Conference 2023 discuss the hot topics this year, from the looming risk of the metaverse to the latest approach to cloud development.

Winn Schwartau, chief visionary officer of The Security Awareness Company, told ISMG's Mathew Schwartz that virtual reality headsets and tools could change for the worse how humans perceive reality.

Schwartau - who coined the term "electronic Pearl Harbor" in the early 1990s - isn't worried about Facebook's virtual reality headset metaverse, but what comes after it. "His point is: We're having better and better technologies to the point where it can make us feel like reality is not reality. What happens when people get in there and start to mess with that? What sort of risks are we facing?" said Schwartz, executive editor of DataBreachToday and Europe.

Today's RSA Editors' Panel - Schwartz; Anna Delaney, director, productions; and Tom Field, senior vice president of editorial, ISMG - discuss:

  • The buzz around generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT and the level of skepticism about their usefulness in the security market today;
  • Venture capital opportunities in today's uncertain economic climate;
  • How technologists are looking beyond "shift left" to a fully cloud-based "shift-up" model.
