Will 2019 Be a Turning Point for 'Self-Sovereign Identity'?

"Self-sovereign identity" projects based on blockchain technology are likely to gain significant momentum in 2019, says analyst Avivah Litan of Gartner Research.

This approach to identity enables individuals to be in control of who accesses information about them, when and for how long.

"We've got a couple of substantial initiatives across the globe. One is by a nonprofit called Sovrin," Litan explains in an interview with Information Security Media Group.

"They've actually got an initiative going live in British Columbia. There are something like 6 million identities that could be using Sovereign's distributed ledger technology and blockchain features by the end of next year. We're also seeing the U.N. issue an RFP asking companies to submit bids for digital identity for refugees, and that will have a big impact on what we call 'blockchain for good'."

In this interview (see audio link below photo), Litan discusses:

  • The role of blockchain in enabling self-sovereign identity;
  • Upcoming self-sovereign identity initiatives;
  • The potential negative repercussions of self-sovereign identity for Google and Facebook.

Litan is a vice president and distinguished analyst at Gartner Research. Her areas of expertise include endpoint security; security analytics for cybersecurity and fraud; user and entity behavioral analytics; and insider threat detection.
