The cloud can be used to improve security by helping to separate data from applications, networks and other infrastructure, says Tom Corn of VMware, a virtualization and cloud computing software provider that's part of Dell Technologies.

"Having gone through breaches and seen them up close myself, I can say, you're often struck - even the most sophisticated and mature organizations - [by] how little compartmentalization and visibility and control we actually have inside," he says. "You can't manage what you don't understand, and you can't secure what you can't manage."

In an audio interview at RSA Conference 2017, Corn discusses:

  • How to better leverage the cloud and so-called virtual fabric for security;
  • The upside of using virtualization to create logical boundaries around - and least-privilege access to - applications;
  • The need to design enterprise IT environments that are simpler and thus easier to secure.

At VMware, Corn is senior vice president of the security product group. Previously, he was senior vice president and chief strategy officer for RSA. He's also served as the vice president of marketing and strategy for both Mazu Networks and NextNine, was the director of product marketing for Avid Technology and worked as an Accenture consultant.
