The Next Generation of Encryption

Voltage Security's Bower on Data-Centric Security
Voltage Security's Mark Bower contends data-centric security can help break down barriers to the widespread use of encryption and help protect sensitive information, including credit card numbers.

"Data-centric security, especially with the new techniques like format-persevering encryption, allows you to protect data ... without destroying the value of the data, so it can still be, in many cases, consumed without decryption in applications, databases and business processes," Bower says.

In an interview at the Infosecurity Europe 2014 conference in London, Bower:

  • Describes how data-centric security works, eliminating the need for decryption;
  • Explains how the method is applied for payment card transactions;
  • Outlines how the approach pairs with data analytics.

Bower, vice president of product management and solutions architecture at Voltage, is an expert in data protection solutions, with more than two decades of industry and technology experience. He is involved in industry standards bodies, including the PCI Security Standards Council and the Security POS Vendors Alliance (SPVA). He has authored several patents for e-commerce technology innovations in POS software management and remote control.
