Iran's Cyber Response: 'They're Going to Unleash the Hounds'
VMware's Tom Kellermann on Questions to Ask About Critical Infrastructure DefenseFollowing the killing of Iran's Major General Qasem Soleimani in a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad late last week, security experts have warned of possible retaliatory cyber strikes. Tom Kellermann of VMware believes those attacks are imminent. "The period of mourning is over, and I think the holy war in American cyberspace is yet to begin."
Kellermann, a longtime analyst of the nation-state threat landscape who was an adviser to the Obama administration, says he's genuinely concerned about what happens next.
"It's all hands on deck," Kellermann says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "We have to be very conscious of protecting ourselves, and we actually have to be respectful of the capabilities, the stratagems and the sophistication of our adversary. This is not the time for arrogance or ignorance."
In the interview (see audio link below photo), Kellermann discusses:
- Possible forms of cyber retaliation;
- How to detect signs of compromise;
- Questions CISOs need to ask about threat hunting and incident response.
Kellermann, head of cybersecurity strategy at VMware, is the former CEO at Strategic Cyber Ventures. He's a cyber intelligence expert, author, professor and leader in the field of cybersecurity. He held a seat on the Commission on Cyber Security for the 44th President of the United States and served as an adviser to the International Cyber Security Protection Alliance. As chief cybersecurity officer for Trend Micro, he was responsible for analysis of emerging cybersecurity threats and relevant defensive technologies.
