DDoS: Evolving Attacks and Response

Corero's Stephenson on the Sophistication of Defenses
Ashley Stephenson
DDoS attacks have grown in sophistication. But so have organizations' dependencies on the services disrupted by DDoS, says Corero's Ashley Stephenson. How should security leaders respond to protect their critical services?

Much has been said about the evolution of DDoS attacks over the past two years. But the impact of these attacks is even greater today, owing to organizations' increased reliance on online services to deliver revenue, Stephenson says. Because the attacks are so successful, and DDoS tools accessible to attackers, the strikes continue at a debilitating pace.

"As the applications have grown, more people have access to these attack mechanisms, and we have seen them use it more," Stephenson says.

In an interview at the Infosecurity Europe 2014 conference in London, Stephenson discusses:

  • How DDoS attacks have evolved;
  • The merits of on-premise vs. hosted solutions;
  • Strategies for mitigating the Heartbleed vulnerability.
    • As CEO, Stephenson leads Corero's global expansion strategy. Previously, he was CEO of Reva Systems, acquired by ODIN, and Xedia Corp., acquired by Lucent. He was awarded "CEO of the Year" by the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council for his work at Xedia Corp.
