Blue Coat's Murthy and Schoenfeld on Securing Growth
Balancing Innovation with Risk

Large-scale adoption of cloud, mobile and a combination of innovative technologies have introduced chaos into the security ecosystem. As the industry surges forward in its adoption of new and innovative technologies, security is not receiving the attention it should. Is there a need to slow down and regroup?

"Slowing down innovation is wishful thinking," says Sasi Murthy, Vice President, Solution and Market Development, Blue Coat Systems. "What organizations need to do is understand the risks that every new technology innovation adopted presents to their business. They need visibility into what's going on and then have a very prescriptive step-by-step plan. Having a clear idea of your risk posture puts you ahead."

When you understand your risk, you can build your strategy from there - that's got to be the starting point, she says. Steve Schoenfeld, Senior Vice President, Products at Blue Coat Systems agrees that as organizations look to innovate, understanding the risks is imperative.

"You need to understand how things work together, and then you can choose the correct security profile for your business. But being risk-aware is a given," he says. The conundrum is that the overall threats that companies are faced with conflict with the initiatives that concurrently call for them to be more open, he says.

Information Security Media Group spoke to Murthy and Schoenfeld in this exclusive interview on a broad range of topics pertaining to the key challenges they are hearing from Indian practitioners. They also share insight on:

  • Threat research from Blue Coat;
  • IOT and the need for focus on network and gateway-centric security;
  • Preparing for 'Digital India' challenges.

Schoenfeld has over 20 years of experience in enterprise security and more than 30 years in technology-related roles. As senior vice president of products at Blue Coat Systems, he leads the product organization, including product management and business development. Prior to joining the security industry, Steve spent more than 10 years in technology assessment and deployment roles for major banks in New York.

Prior to her current role, Murthy held other product management leadership roles at Blue Coat. Before joining Blue Coat, she was a product manager at Brocade, where she launched the first 16-port storage area networking switch. Earlier, she was at IBM, where she helped create a separate subsidiary for the Canadian manufacturing business, which then went public as Celestica, Inc.
