Devising an effective national IoT security strategy requires four essential steps, says Rishi Bhatnagar, chairman of the Institution of Engineering and Technology's IoT panel India.

"The first step ... is making people aware that there is a threat to security," Bhatnagar says in an interview with Information Security Media Group. "The second part is how can you devise a technical solution so that technically you are making things secure and you are not allowing any kind of vulnerability or penetration of security threats to happen?"

The two other essential steps, he says, are developing appropriate regulations and ensuring enough individuals with the right skills are available to help ensure security.

In this interview (see audio link below image), Bhatnagar also discusses:

  • Whether current security practices can scale up to the IoT challenge;
  • What's missing when it comes to IoT security;
  • Why it's important to have a legal framework for IoT.

Bhatnagar is chairperson of The IET India IoT Panel. The panel enables businesses to come together to ideate and work towards influencing the future of IoT in India. He is co-author of the book "Enterprise IoT."
