New CEO Scott Harrell wants Infoblox to evolve from classic networking DNS management to bringing networking and security together in ways that optimize protection and efficiency.

DNS serves as a foundational building block for security since it is universal across large client devices and small mobile phones, but Harrell said many organizations struggle to interpret what DNS is telling them. Infoblox's visibility into the networking side allows the company to work effectively with third-party technology providers as well as facilitate a rapid prevention, detection and response motion (see: Infoblox's Jesper Andersen on How to Identify Threats Sooner).

"When we think about DNS security, we're really looking at the attackers' infrastructure and understanding that in a depth that really nobody else has," Harrell said. "We have a great corpus of information that we produce around suspicious data feeds. We can use that same technique to figure out stuff well before it's ever been identified as potentially malicious."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Harrell also discussed:

  • How look-alike domain monitoring builds on Infoblox's DNS monitoring expertise;
  • Opportunities that FedRAMP authorizations have unlocked in the federal space;
  • How Infoblox competes with and partners with secure access service edge firms.

Harrell has spent more than two decades in leadership roles and has extensive portfolio management experience. Prior to joining Infoblox, he led Cisco's $20 billion intent-based network business unit, where he oversaw the enterprise, IoT and data center portfolio. Prior to that, Harrell led product management for Cisco's security portfolio. Earlier in his career, he held leadership roles at Intel and strategic consulting roles at early-stage startups.
