"The government needs to think about the next big threat because what works today is not going to work tomorrow," Velasquez says. "While we are talking authentication and verification, let's talk about policies around validation and re-verification. Having validation at multiple steps along the way and multiple places in that process will also help."

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Velasquez also discusses:

  • How to improve the process of providing benefits to help reduce fraud;
  • What it means to take a multilayered approach to security;
  • Why investing only in technologies is not enough.

Velasquez, president and CEO at the Identity Theft Resource Center, previously served as the vice president of operations for the San Diego Better Business Bureau and spent 21 years at the San Diego District Attorney’s Office. She is a recipient of the National Crime Victim Service Award from the Department of Justice and the Office for Victims of Crime and the Florence Kelley Consumer Leadership Award from the National Consumers League.
