“The mobile operators are sitting on a wealth of data that could prevent this fraud from happening in the first place. This data can help banks in their authentication processes,” Messenger says.

Mobile operators offer technologies, including applications that check whether a phone is on call divert mode or has been reported as lost or stolen, that banks can use to help fight fraud, she says.

In a video interview with Information Security Media Group, Messenger discusses:

  • How SIM swap fraud has evolved;
  • The technologies mobile operators are using to fight fraud;
  • How the "zero trust" model can help fraud-fighting efforts.

Messenger heads the fraud protection services division for JT Group, a telecom company with more than 600 mobile network operator partners worldwide. She has worked in the telecommunications industry for more than 10 years.
