Nearly every country around the world now has "their own flavor of HIPAA," and originally, these regulations were focused on the confidentially of data, he said. But since many of these regulations have gone into effect, important considerations have changed.

"Compliance is not the goal necessarily when it comes to protecting data," he said. "This data has value that I don't think some of the original rule-makers could have predicted when they set the rules. What I need to do to be compliant differs greatly from what I need to do to be secure in this day and age."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Lehmann also discusses:

  • The various cyberthreats facing different segments of the healthcare industry;
  • Why data integrity and availability are becoming a top focus for the sector;
  • IoT and OT security challenges in healthcare.

Lehmann has expertise in enterprise software, financial risk, business analysis and risk management. Prior to joining Google, he was the Americas leader of security at Amazon Web Services and served on the board of directors for Health-ISAC.
