Organizations and security professionals often assume that data centers are inherently more secure than other computing environments. Vulnerability researcher Jesse Chick busted this tacit assumption.

"Whether you're co-locating in some large data center out in the desert or hosting primarily on-premises, a lot of the devices in those environments tend to be the same and therefore have a lot of the same issues and vulnerabilities," Chick said.

As data centers play a critical role in the digital ecosystem, addressing these vulnerabilities is imperative for data center defenders. "Update, update, update. That's the advice that we give vendors, or rather administrators, ad nauseam," he said, "because, to a certain extent, that's really all you can do."

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Black Hat Europe 2023, Chick also discussed:

  • Details of the vulnerabilities identified in two types of technologies: a DDI solution and a keyboard-video-mouse device;
  • How to adopt "security by design" testing;
  • Key takeaways for data center defenders.

Chick focuses on vulnerability discovery and exploit development for IoT devices. Prior to He has held several roles across research, teaching and back-end web development at Trellix, McAfee, ON Semiconductor, Oregon State University and various startups.
