Cybersecurity Evolution: The Past, Present and Future

InfoSec Labs Founder Michael Miora on Cybersecurity History and Its Relevance
Michael Miora, founder and CEO, InfoSec Labs

Michael Miora, founder and CEO of InfoSec Labs - a pioneer in cybersecurity consulting - started the company in 1989. Security has been an issue for generations, he said, but things started to change once technology came into play.

Miora said one of the pivotal events in cybersecurity history was the infamous Morris worm that shifted the notion from trusting all entities within the network to the contemporary principle of zero trust. The adoption of email introduced new attack vectors, such as the ILOVEYOU virus.

In the current cybersecurity environment, the conventional notion of perimeter security has become obsolete because of hybrid cloud deployments and ubiquitous endpoints. Thus, defining the perimeter has become increasingly complex - which can be difficult for the business to understand.

"One of the biggest issues CISOs face is that all security people speak security and talk in jargon. This often impedes effective communication with the board and nontechnical stakeholders," Miora said. "The main lesson for experienced or budding young CISOs is to learn the language of business." Security leaders should balance technical acumen with strategic thinking, guiding their organizations toward resilient and adaptable security postures, he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Black Hat USA 2023, Miora also discussed:

  • What makes today's attack surfaces and adversaries unique;
  • Milestones in the evolution of security;
  • How to put lessons learned into practice.

Miora served as the managing director of cyber risk at Kroll. He was also the senior vice president and global CISO of Korn Ferry, a global public company with over 100 offices in 80 countries. He serves on the advisory board of several security firms.
