The Changing Landscape of Cybersecurity Education

Forrester Analyst Jess Burn Discusses New Avenues in Cybersecurity Training
Jess Burn, senior analyst, Forrester

As the digital landscape evolves, security organizations need cybersecurity skills and training platforms that can provide the right resources for an organization "by showing what someone has got in terms of skills, without necessarily fully relying on their CVs," said Jess Burn, senior analyst at Forrester.

Security certifications, Burn said, often focus on "point-in-time education." In contrast, cybersecurity skills and training platforms prioritize hands-on experiences. Burn detailed how these platforms offer practical labs and simulations that closely mirror real-world scenarios and equip professionals to handle a range of challenges, from red-team exercises to full-blown crisis simulations.

"Another great use case is using these platforms to create career paths for people who are, for instance, at Level 1-type SOC analyst and get them to an incident responder, get them to a threat hunter, and keep them in your organization, because a lot of folks feel that the only way up is out, and that creates the mid-career crisis we have with security professionals," she said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Black Hat USA 2023, Burn also discussed:

  • The benefits of a certificate or skills and training platform;
  • How cybersecurity skills and training platforms foster diversity in the field;
  • Why organizations are adopting multilayered email security solutions.

Burn contributes to Forrester's research on the role of the CISO and zero trust. She also covers continuous controls monitoring, incident response and crisis management, and security training, education and certification.
