Australian Children's Charity Breach Affects 80,000 Donors
Hackers Target Smith Family Charity, Compromise Donor Credit Cards & Personal Data
An Australian nonprofit children's charity warned about 80,000 donors of the compromise of their credit card and personal information resulting from a recent hacking incident.
The Australian charity, The Smith Family, says in a media statement that the hack was an "unsuccessful" attempt to steal money, but the hacker did manage to access donor information.
According to CEO Doug Taylor on Tuesday, the compromised information included donors' names, addresses, contact information and donation amounts. The charity did not store copies of documents such as passports or other identity information. The card information breached is limited to the first four and the last digits on some cards. No other card data was stored by the charity, the statement says.

The organization did not share a timeline for the attack and could not immediately be reached for comment by Information Security Media Group.
Warning for Supporters
There is no indication so far that donor information had been misused, Taylor says. In a personal email to supporters, the charity recommends affected people stay extra vigilant to scams via phones and emails, and it encourages people to change their email passwords.
