Taking the Elevator to the Cloud: Otis' Security Journey
Wiz's Luttwak, Otis' Hawkins, Microsoft's Tschumy Talk Cloud Migration ChallengesEven as an increasing number of companies begin to migrate their systems to the cloud for better performance optimization and cybersecurity, each company's journey is unique. Otis Elevator Company, "an over 100-year-old startup" that was spun off from United Technologies in 2021, witnessed its own set of challenges, came up with workarounds and successfully moved to the cloud.
While most people see the journey to cloud as a lift-and-shift migration, that's a big mistake, said Darrell Hawkins, cyber chief technology officer at Otis Elevator Company. "You have to design it from the ground up. And you have to understand that if you're just taking legacy applications and moving them to the cloud, you're in for a rude awakening," he said.
Ami Luttwak, co-founder and chief technology officer at Wiz, said, "It's about reinventing how you work. It's not just how you build in security. It's how you reimagine how security works. You actually change the processes overall."
William Tschumy, global senior director of VC Partnerships at Microsoft, added that companies cannot use the tools, processes and architectures they apply in their on-premises data centers to a shared environment with an "entirely new set of capabilities." "It can be very, very expensive if you try to apply those old approaches to the new world," he said.
In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at RSA Conference 2023, Luttwak, Hawkins and Tschumy discuss:
- Trends among companies migrating to the cloud;
- The advantages of building a cloud security strategy from the ground up;
- Addressing technical and operational challenges during cloud migration.
Hawkins has extensive management experience and technical expertise in cybersecurity, including risk management, information security management, PCI DSS, IT strategy and application security.
Luttwak has more than 10 years of experience in the information security industry. His expertise spans cybersecurity, cloud security, network security, operating system internals, software development and MySQL. Prior to joining Wiz, he was the CTO at Microsoft Israel's R&D group.
Tschumy is responsible for driving strategic alignment between Microsoft and venture capital firms, accelerating growth in the portfolio and identifying areas for partnership. Prior to Microsoft, he was the director of user experience at Flock.
