Cisco Unveils Open Source Initiative

Scott Harrell Explains Project
Cisco has launched a new open source initiative focused on application identification, says Scott Harrell, vice president of the company's security business group.

The Open Application ID project's early adopters likely will be universities, governments and others that develop applications, he explains.

In an interview at RSA Conference 2014, Harrell also describes the introduction of AMP Everywhere, advanced malware protection that can be applied across Web gateways and e-mail gateways on premises and in the cloud.

At Cisco, Harrell is responsible for the strategy and product direction of the company's security portfolio. He leads the product development strategy and business development for Cisco's ASA, WSA and ESA platforms as well as security intelligence operations and cloud Web security offerings. Harrell joined Cisco in 2001 and has held several different positions, including leading product management and engineering teams. He also has led software and hardware development teams for the company's enterprise routing portfolio and led product management for its enterprise WAN strategy.
